From Habitual Consumption to Allowing Juicy Space

Here’s the hard truth I’ve recently learned:

Consuming more content will only get you more stuck and confused.

In the past few months I’ve gone from being a serial consumer of content to an avoider of content.

The amount of podcasts, books, videos courses that I used to consume was totally what I thought was normal.

Until I was browsing through The Artist's Way a few months ago, and I saw that one of the chapters mentioned taking a break from reading books.

That suggestion surprised me. Aren't books creative?

But for us creatives consuming other people's ideas before expressing our own really affects us.

We are what we consume, in a sense.

I was taken aback given the amount of books that I go through.

There are over 100 on my Kindle and until about a month ago, I read non-stop in the gaps of my day.

I also listened to podcasts and to all the course content that I had purchased over the years. Even on my walks I was consuming content.

Until recently I just had the urge to stop.

I had ENOUGH.

I craved silence.

I started doing my morning pages first thing in the morning, which is 3 pages of stream of consciousness.

I really enjoy it.

It makes me feel more grounded. More connected. More balanced. Less floaty.

  • In addition, I stopped reading in the morning with my coffee.

  • I stopped listening to podcasts & course content.

  • I stopped reading before bed, and carrying my kindle around with me so that god forbid I have to wait in line without something to read!!

Is this you too?

If so, you’re not alone.

I believe some of us are deathly afraid of silence, and what we might feel as a result.

So I slowly started allowing the gaps.

Allowing the space.

And since I’ve been allowing gaps and more space, it turns out there was a radio station I hadn't really been tuned into.

And it was just connecting all the dots of everything that I had tried to consume to figure out in my brain.

Wow.

What a freaking revelation!

Now I see the value in creating all this juicy space in my life.

I see all the answers, the direction, the questions that I have about my life, my business, my next step, or even something as specific as my copy – All the answers were there waiting for me in the gaps.

But, I get it, it’s very difficult to ditch the consuming habit.

This is why the first part of my business coaching package for creatives, is to help my clients declutter in a BIG  way – both their life AND their business – so THAT they can have full access to all their creative resources. To their big ideas.

And it’s super tough because we’ve been trained to think that if we’re not consuming or producing, we’re doing something wrong.

It’s a powerful place to be in when you know that enough is enough.

But it still takes practice to ditch the old habits and create new ones.

And that’s what we do together.

The result?

Growing your business with much more focus, ease and without the stress.

What's one way you're filling in your time, that you want to let go of?
